It is a mistake for parents to neglect the dental health of a baby, even when they don’t have teeth yet! An infant that is purely breast fed is unlikely to get cavities. It is only later when toddlers crave sugary food that they spoil their milk teeth and get their first Spokane dentist visit. Parents don’t bother with baby teeth and gum cleaning, when there is no immediate, visible problem. What parents do not realize is that solid dental health begins even before baby has teeth.
Best Dental Health Begins with Mother’s Health
The foundation for baby’s teeth begins in the womb, so it really matters that the mother is healthy while pregnant. Yet another reason for pregnant women to eat well. It is also recommended that women get a thorough dental exam and have any dental problems taken care of before pregnancy, to prevent possible infections during a critical time when women need to be in their best health.
The Realities of Bottle Tooth Decay
Bootle tooth decay are dental carries caused by leaving a bottle of baby formula or juice in the mouth for too long. It can be caused by added sugars to milk and juices or by natural sugars in fruit juices. To sooth children, parent give in to shortcuts and may dip a pacifier in honey or sugar to encourage the child to suckle, then sleep. Or they add sweeteners to bottled drinks that a child consumes before sleeping. Do not do this. Sleeping with traces of sugar in the mouth hastens tooth decay. To keep bottle tooth decay at bay, avoid introducing sugar to your baby’s diet for as long as you can. Sugar is very addictive.
TEETHING PAINS
Teeth will begin showing around six months. Some show earlier and some later. Expect 20 primary teeth or milk teeth to erupt between the ages of six months and three years. Teething is very uncomfortable for a baby. If you remember your late teens and early twenties when your wisdom teeth erupted, then multiply that by five, because babies and toddlers expect to have even more new teeth than just four wisdoms, that is how infant teething feels like. The safest way to sooth teething pains is to let baby gum something cool and soft. Teething gels contain topical anaesthetic and do not last very long. Be sure to cuddle your baby at their worst.
It is wrong to take baby teeth for granted, just because they are temporary. Permanent teeth come in at age six, and baby teeth help as a placeholder in the gum line for permanent teeth. A very young child might not have self esteem issues about missing or decaying teeth, but they will need teeth to help talk and chew. If you want your child to eat well, without pain, and learn to speak well without speech problems, take care of their teeth from the very beginning.
